none ENGLISH and ENGLISH COMPOSITION

The English program provides a strong foundation in the study of the English language and literatures and offers the B.A. in English Literature or Pre-law focus, and a Minor in English.

Students may study American, African-American, British, African, Women’s, and global literatures as well as Linguistics, history of English and Creative Writing.

The B.A. in English Pre-law track requires additional coursework in Business, Communication, History, Philosophy, Psychology, and Sociology.

The University Writing Program consists of 4 Composition courses – ENG 0950 (remedial/ developmental), 1100 (post-remedial/developmental), 1101 and 1102 - and prepares students with writing skills needed for success in any major. Ultimately, students must qualify to take and pass ENG 1102, then pass the English Proficiency test (otherwise take and pass ENG 3000) in order to graduate.

Careers
The skills developed in the English programs prepare students for careers or graduate study in Management, Finance, Communication and Government. Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers, and Presidents have former English majors within their ranks. The Pre-law track prepares students for Law School or careers related to Law, including Public Policy, Diplomacy. In any post-baccalaureate plan, faculty mentors and the Career Services Center provide support.

Preparation
For all Humanities majors we suggest you complete four years of high school English and two years of a second language. We encourage your enrollment in Advanced Placement (AP) courses and will negotiate credit, placement or exemption for AP scores of 3 (qualified) or higher in the following subjects: Chinese Language and Culture, English Language, English Literature, European History, French Language, French Literature, Spanish Language, World History, and U.S. History.
