Responsibilities:
• Develop, implement and oversee a comprehensive student retention program that incorporates academic programs, student life and other related University units.
• Provide instructional support for faculty to enhance student learning, academic success, and graduation rates.
• Oversee and assure the provision of effective academic planning and support services for students.
• Coordinate effective tracking, early alert, advising and mentoring services to enhance student academic success.
1. Provide administrative leadership for the Center for Teaching, Learning and Student Success.
2. Evaluate the University’s current retention activities and recommend the appropriate structure, organization, strategies and resources necessary to achieve student retention and graduation goals as follows:
Increase the rate of first-year student retention from 49% to 75% within eight years.
Increase the returning rate by 2-3% per year at both the undergraduate and graduate levels during the period 2008-2017.
Increase the six-year graduation rate to meet or exceed national averages of CSU’s peer institutions.
3. Ensure effective and mutually reinforcing student retention activities across programs, departments and divisions of the University.
4. Provide regular status reports for University stakeholders on progress in the University’s retention of students to graduation.
5. Participate in development of a data-driven assessment plan to regularly evaluate the effectiveness of retention activities and recommend changes as necessary.
6. Provide best-practice teaching, learning and retention workshops for faculty, staff and administrators.
7. Develop a successful proposal to secure external funding to support student retention efforts.
Qualifications
1. A terminal degree in education, student development, psychology, counseling or a related field.
2. Three to five years of administrative experience with a proven record of success in student retention.
3. Ability to work with diverse campus academic and administrative units.
4. Knowledge of and experience with research and best practices in student retention.
5. Successful experience writing grant proposals.
6. Excellent communication skills.
7. Familiarity with or ability to learn the Banner Information System.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Strategic planning experience and a broad understanding of contemporary higher education issues.
2. Experience working with diverse student populations (e.g., traditional and non-traditional students; both residential and commuter students; students enrolled in online courses).
3. Familiarity with curriculum development and assessment of student learning.
