Library Policies

General Policies

The Library is an academic unit, and users are expected to exercise a certain decorum grounded in the concepts of community and respect. The public areas and library collections are developed and maintained for all patrons; therefore:

    • Cell phones should be set to vibrate or silent before entering the library
    • Headphones must be used to listen to music, class lecture, and other audio files
    • Materials must be checked out according to library procedures
    • A valid Central State University (CSU) ID card is necessary for all library transactions
    • Care should be taken in using books and equipment
    • No food may be consumed in public areas; drinks with a lid are allowed
    • The library is a smoke-free building
    • Noise levels should be kept at a minimum, even when entering the library
    • The main entrance and exit should be used except during stated emergencies
  • Class Reserves

The library holds some texts from several years past, but, as a rule, does not have student texts unless faculty brings specific items for class reserve. A reserve form must be filled out to place materials on reserve for a class. Items on reserve can be found by using HALLIE the online library catalog and choosing the Class Reserves tab. Unless otherwise specified, reserve books may be used for four (4) hours.

Please encourage students to bring the class syllabus to the library so that the library staff can provide effective assistance.

    Identification

A current Central State University ID card is necessary for all library loans to Central State University faculty, staff, and students.  The patron record, created at the time of the first visit, is updated as follows:

Students - First visit of every semester
Faculty and Staff - Annually (automatic)

Visitors from other OhioLINK institutions will be asked for the ID card issued by their institutions.

    Your Patron Record

The patron record created by the library staff at your first visit will remain in the database throughout your years at Central State University.  You can view your record by selecting "My Library Record" from the menu options in HALLIE from any public terminal.  Its features include:

    • Personal information
    • Materials checked out
    • Held items (OhioLINK requests)
    • Due dates
    • Fines
    • Renewal options

    Using Other OhioLINK Libraries
CSU faculty, staff, and students may go to other OhioLINK libraries to borrow materials using current CSU ID cards.  Students should take care to visit the CSU library early each semester to update patron records.

    OhioLINK Requests
All OhioLINK requests require the library barcode located on the CSU ID card.

    Use of OhioLINK Research Databases
Faculty, staff, and students who want to access research databases from computers not on the CSU network will be asked for a name and barcode number before using the database.

  • Collection Emphasis:

The major emphasis of the archives collection at Central State University is preserving the university’s official records.  The collection includes administrative records, minutes of the board of trustees, university publications, and photographs of university people, places, and events.

    General Instructions for Archival Research:

Make an appointment and communicate your research interest in advance.  For assistance with archives inquiry, please email the reference desk.

Bring only necessary note-taking materials such as cards, notebooks, and laptops.

Understand that even though some material may be preserved, they may be too fragile to permit handling.

Photocopying is 10 cents per page. Copy cards are not available

You must have written permission to reproduce photographs or other archival material.  There is a fee for commercial use of (CSU) archival material.

  • To maximize the availability of resources and to ensure fair access to all, patrons are expected to follow the library's rules. Violation of these rules may result in the loss of library privileges.

Library staff has full authority to enforce these policies and procedures as well as policies related to general behavior in the library.

    • Equipment and software must be used as installed. Patrons must not reconfigure the workstations, load new software, or run their own software.
    • Patrons are expected to be considerate of others when viewing internet materials
    • Patrons are responsible for compliance with copyright notices and restrictions attached to website content as well as all applicable State and Federal laws.
