Air quality is a hot topic
Air quality has become a hot topic lately. Central State University Professor of Environmental Engineering Dr. Krishna Kumar V. Nedunuri recently shared the local air quality index with the campus community.
The website provides current air quality conditions and forecasts conditions for the present day and subsequent days. The interactive Maps and Data menu enables users to choose a ZIP code address, select the pollutant, and zoom in to the region to find the air quality index (AQI). A color-coded legend shows if it is safe to travel outside or if one should stay indoors until air quality improves.
Hot weather from the late afternoon to evenings in valleys, such as the Ohio Miami Valley, is the worst time to venture out, as this is when AQI levels can be the worst because vehicle pollutants accumulate throughout the day.
Exposure to high levels of certain pollutants may seriously affect the lungs and hearts of people with asthma or pre-disposed heart conditions. Older adults and children are particularly vulnerable to high levels of pollutants.
