Dr. Morakinyo A.O. Kuti, who took the helm as Central State University’s 10th President on July 1, brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision for the Institution’s future. Most recently serving as the vice president of Research and Economic Development, Kuti has already made significant strides in fostering innovation and addressing societal needs through research initiatives.

Kuti graduated from Central State University with a Bachelor of Science in 1985, earning a Master of Business Administration with an International Business concentration from St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida, in 1987. In 2017, Kuti earned his doctoral degree in Public Policy and Administration from Walden University.

At the heart of Kuti’s approach is a strong belief in leveraging research to tackle pressing societal issues. He emphasizes the importance of identifying problems that research can solve, ensuring that resources — particularly talented individuals — are directed toward these goals.

His leadership philosophy centers on empowering researchers, faculty, and staff with the necessary tools and support to drive innovation.

Under his guidance, Central State University is set to expand its research capabilities and launch new programs to address critical disparities in healthcare and other societal issues.

Empowering faculty and staff

Recognizing that the University’s success hinges on its people, Kuti stresses the importance of attracting and retaining exceptional faculty and staff. He outlines four key principles for recruitment: alignment with the University’s mission, belief in that mission, qualifications, and a strong work ethic. He advocates for robust professional development opportunities and rigorous evaluation processes to ensure that faculty and staff continuously meet high standards.

Looking forward, Kuti plans to initiate a comprehensive strategic planning process involving all stakeholders — students, faculty, staff, and alumni. This inclusive approach aims to define the University’s direction over the next five years. By fostering a collaborative environment and listening to diverse perspectives, University leaders intend to craft a strategic plan that reflects the collective vision and aspirations of the Central State University community.

As an alum and now President, Kuti's vision for Central State University is clear: to enhance the student experience, foster academic excellence, and ensure the University's long-term sustainability. "Our goal is to improve the quality of our student experience and their academic outcomes," Kuti emphasized.

Central to this vision is the implementation of guided pathways, aimed at supporting student success from enrollment to graduation. This initiative reflects Kuti's belief in creating a supportive educational environment where every student can thrive.

Beyond academics, Kuti is committed to fostering a culture of research and innovation at Central State. "Research at Central State aims to address societal needs," he explained. Through strategic initiatives and interdisciplinary collaboration, Kuti aims to position Central State as a hub of innovation, tackling pressing issues and contributing to the advancement of knowledge.

Building upon the Land-Grant mission

Transitioning from his emphasis on academic excellence, Kuti underscored Central State University’s role as an 1890 Land-Grant Institution, uniquely positioned to impact communities through research and outreach initiatives. Embracing this mission, Kuti envisions Central State as a center for academic achievement and a catalyst for societal transformation and innovation.

Central State University Extension currently serves 42 of Ohio’s 88 counties.

“We have Extension agents focusing on agriculture and natural resources, community and economic development, and family and consumer sciences,” Kuti said. “They are working with farmers in Appalachia and small businesses in Cleveland. We have CSU Extension agents working with organizations to address family health in Cleveland and Extension agents working with aging people in Cincinnati."

Enhancing student success and infrastructure

Improving student success remains one of Kuti’s top priorities. He emphasized the need for improving communication within the University and with external stakeholders and optimizing financial resources to effectively achieve the University’s mission.

Additionally, he will advocate to enhance campus infrastructure and provide ample opportunities for professional growth and development among faculty and staff.

Kuti’s tenure as President promises to be transformative for Central State University. With a focus on research-driven solutions, faculty and staff empowerment, strategic planning, and community engagement, he envisions a bright future for the Institution. His approach underscores a commitment to excellence, innovation, and inclusivity, setting a course for sustained growth and impact in higher education.

As Central State University prepares to embark on this new chapter under Kuti’s leadership, stakeholders eagerly anticipate the implementation of his strategic vision and the realization of ambitious goals to propel the University forward in the years to come.
