Central State University's 2024 Homecoming, which ran from Oct. 9-12, offered a vibrant lineup of events, including concerts, the Student Government Association inauguration, the Royal Court coronation, a football game against Clark Atlanta, class reunions, and the Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Highlights included the CSU Chorus gospel concert, a lively parade, and the annual Alumni Scholarship Breakfast and Meeting. Key events like the Greek Step Show and the Saturday Night Gala also drew crowds. The schedule fostered community through alumni gatherings, vendor fairs, and more, creating an unforgettable Maroon & Gold experience

In addition to the fun, CSU’s Land-Grant Showcase gave attendees a glimpse into the University’s academic and research achievements. As a Land-Grant institution, Central State has been a hub for agricultural and technological innovation, and this event underscored its commitment to community engagement through its Extension programs. Attendees explored cutting-edge projects addressing critical societal challenges, showcasing how CSU continues to lead in academic excellence and community service.

While Homecoming is known for its lively celebrations, Central State also honored those who paved the way. The Annual Memorial Service paid tribute to community members who have passed on, honoring their contributions to the University’s rich history with a balloon release. This solemn and heartfelt ceremony reinforced the idea that Homecoming is not just about returning to celebrate — it’s about remembering the legacy of those who have come before and their lasting impact on the University.

The 17th annual Visiting Alumni Day saw alumni returning to their alma mater to share their experiences with current students. This event provided invaluable mentorship opportunities, where Centralians recounted their journeys, from life on campus to their professional careers. CSU strengthened the bonds between its past, present, and future students through these connections.

Celebrating tradition, empowering the future

At the heart of Central State’s Homecoming are the values of unity, tradition, and progress. The weeklong celebration capped off with a thrilling football game, where the Marauders took the field, cheered on by a stadium filled with fans embodying the pride and power of the CSU family.

As the University closes the chapter on another successful Homecoming, the essence of Central State University — fellowship, resilience, and legacy — was celebrated in full, promising even greater things to come in future celebrations.

Honoring HBCU Homecoming traditions

Central State University’s Homecoming was a celebration of its legacy and part of a larger cultural tradition shared among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the nation. HBCU homecomings are unique events that transcend a typical college reunion, serving as a beacon of cultural pride, community strength, and the preservation of Black history.

These gatherings are infused with a blend of tradition and festivity, from the electric atmosphere of halftime shows featuring dazzling performances by marching bands and dance troupes to the spiritual enrichment found in services and alumni gatherings. CSU’s Homecoming tailgate mirrored this tradition, providing a space for generations of Marauders to come together in fellowship while reflecting on the University's contributions to the broader HBCU legacy.

HBCU homecomings also stand as a testament to resilience and empowerment. They provide a platform for celebrating achievements within the Black community, recognizing the contributions of alumni who have gone on to excel in various industries. Whether through scholarship, leadership, or creative expression, homecoming offers a time to honor the past while inspiring future generations to carry the torch forward.

In this way, Central State’s Homecoming stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the rich, enduring Homecoming traditions of HBCUs nationwide — a celebration not just of one institution but of a collective heritage, history, and hope for the future.
