As Central State University gears up for the highly anticipated Homecoming celebration, alumni, students, and the entire Marauder family are buzzing with excitement. The tailgating experience is one of the most beloved traditions, bringing together generations of Central State graduates for two days of fun, food, and fellowship.

“When we talk about tailgating, it’s more than just a pre-game event,” said Keith Aaron Perkins, director of the Office of Alumni Relations and proud alum (’82). “For us, it’s a two-day day party — a gathering where we rekindle relationships, share stories, and celebrate our bond with Central State.”

Perkins has been attending Homecoming for decades, and he emphasizes that for many, the tailgating experience goes beyond the typical definition. It’s a reunion of lifelong friends and fellow alumni who formed strong connections during their years at CSU.

“Some of us have been coming back together for over 40 years," he said.

"The relationships we built at Central State are priceless. We share the same stories every year, embellishing them a little more each time, but it’s the genuine connection that keeps us coming back.”

What sets CSU’s tailgating experience apart? According to Perkins, it’s the shared culture and history that makes the Homecoming festivities special. “We’re all one — we’re all Marauders or Centralians,” he said. “No one else shares our history, our football games, our academic achievements. That’s what makes us unique.”

The tailgate is more than just a party. Alumni of all ages, from recent graduates to those who have not visited in decades, return to campus to celebrate. The affinity tents that dot the tailgate area represent the various organizations, fraternities, sororities, and social groups that make up the CSU family. “It’s all generations of alumni having a great time,” Perkins explained. “Whether you’re under a tent or pulled up with your RV, it’s about fellowship.”

For some alums, it is a chance to reflect on the history and legacy of Central State. As Ohio’s only public Historically Black College or University (HBCU), Central State has long been a beacon of opportunity. Perkins recalls stories of students who found CSU to be a haven, a place where they could prove wrong the doubters who said they would not succeed. “We’re thankful — if not for Central State, where would we be?”

Building excitement for Homecoming 2024

As Homecoming approaches, Perkins encourages alumni, especially first-time attendees, to return and take part in the tailgate experience. “We want everyone to come back as proud alums,” he says. “It’s easy to get detached after graduation, but staying connected to your alma mater is about more than just donations. It’s about service and being part of something bigger.”

With a jam-packed schedule that includes everything from the Mister and Miss CSU Coronation to the Homecoming parade, and, of course, the big football game, this year’s celebration promises to be unforgettable. From former athletes to recent graduates, everyone is invited to be part of the camaraderie.

Perkins sums up the atmosphere of Homecoming in three words: “Invigorating, joyous, and thankful.” Whether you are there to catch up with old friends, share a laugh over a favorite memory, or simply soak in the spirit of Central State, you will find this Homecoming to be a celebration of legacy, unity, and Marauder pride.
