The Central State University Department of Mathematics and Computer Science has received a $10,000 unrestricted gift from Google to advance the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) into its curriculum. This marks the third consecutive year the department has received this honor, with Gopalakrishnan Krishnasamy, Ph.D., leading this year’s initiative, focused on developing and teaching ML courses.

The gift follows the achievements of previous recipients, Deng Cao (2022), Ph.D., Chair and Professor of Computer Science, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science; and Emdad Ahmed (2023), Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Computer Science.

Dr. Krishnasamy’s work has been instrumental in introducing students to cutting-edge topics, including quantum computing using tools like Cirq, Google’s Quantum AI platform. This year’s award will further empower faculty to create innovative courses and enrich existing ones, leveraging practical applications of AI and ML technologies.

CSU has embraced Google’s suite of tools to enhance its academic and research offerings. Dr. Cao has integrated Google Colaboratory and TensorFlow into senior-level courses, providing students with hands-on opportunities to design neural networks and solve real-world problems. Similarly, Dr. Ahmed’s research on cybersecurity and privacy using ML, conducted with student collaborators, was recently accepted for presentation at the prestigious International Conference on Creative Communication and Innovative Technology (ICCIT) 2024 Conference.

“We are deeply grateful to Google for their ongoing support of our faculty and students,” Dr. Krishnasamy said.

“This gift not only acknowledges the strides we’ve made but also propels us forward in preparing our students to lead in the ever-evolving field of AI and ML.”

Central State continues to prioritize innovation, fostering an environment where students and faculty collaborate to address global challenges through technology. This partnership exemplifies the University’s commitment to academic excellence and technological advancement.
