Central State’s Li-Byarlay receives AWIS Zenith Award
Congratulations to CSU Research Associate Professor of Entomology Dr. Hongmei Li-Byarlay for receiving the Association for Women in Science (AWIS) Zenith Award, which recognizes AWIS members who demonstrate strong leadership skills, innovative thinking, and a commitment to inclusivity, diversity, equity, and accessibility in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).
According to an AWIS press release, the organization received dozens of nominations highlighting members who launched initiatives to identify gaps and opportunities, designed and established programs to fill these needs, and fostered welcoming and supportive STEM environments.
"These women epitomize the values of AWIS,” said Meredith Gibson, AWIS CEO. “We recognize that diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds are critical to driving innovation and progress in scientific fields, and we are committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM. AWIS is thrilled to recognize these members and appreciate the contributions of all our nominees."
As project director for Pollinator Health, Agricultural Research and Development Program at Central State University, Li-Byarlay says that sustaining plant and animal systems is important to today’s society. The research project focuses on pollinator and bee health for food security and agricultural products. Pollinators are critical for fruit and vegetable production, which are one-third of human food consumption. An example of a current project in progress is the grooming behavior of honey bee and mite resistance. The new research results help to improve sustainable apiculture and agriculture using local resources.
Li-Byarlay advocates for promoting minority students in entomology through active and cutting-edge research activities, teaching, and extension service and focusing on behavioral biology, evolutionary genomics, pollinator health, and Integrated Pest Management.
