National Accounting Association Honors Virginia’s Tyrone E. Dickerson as 2023 Distinguished Service Award Recipient

Tyrone E. Dickerson, CPA, of Richmond, Virginia, was recently recognized for his leadership and efforts to advance the accounting profession as the recipient of the 2023 NASBA Distinguished Service Award.

Dickerson received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Central State University in 1965 and a Master of Business Administration from the Harvard Graduate School of Business.

Presented by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), the NASBA Distinguished Service Award honors individuals who have demonstrated an unswerving commitment and dedication to enhancing the mission of NASBA. Dickerson received the award on Oct. 31 during NASBA's 116th Annual Meeting in New York, New York.

A former member of the NASBA Board of Directors, he served as director-at-large, treasurer, and Middle Atlantic regional director. Dickerson is a former chair of NASBA’s Administration and Finance, CBT Administration, CPE, and Diversity Committees, and CPE Standards Working Group. Previously, he served as a member of NASBA’s Relations with Member Boards Committee and Enforcement Resource Committee.

Dickerson served eight years on the Virginia Board of Accountancy, with two terms as chair. His professional experience includes serving as a founding partner of Dennis, Dickerson & Wilkins – Management Consultants; principal with Lucas Tucker & Co., CPA – the largest African American CPA firm in the country; vice president with Urban National Corporation – venture capital; partner with Mitchell, Titus & Co., CPA; and principal with DRUM Broadcasting.

Following a successful career in the broadcasting industry, Dickerson founded the Tyrone E. Dickerson, CPA firm in 1984. Currently, he practices as a sole practitioner, specializing in auditing small businesses and not-for-profit organizations.

Dickerson’s community involvement is extensive. He currently serves on the Virginia Union University Board of Trustees, where he is chair of the Audit Committee and a member of the Finance and Academic Affairs committees. He is a lifetime member and past Grand Chapter auditor (16 years) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He is a member and current thesauristes of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity-Alpha Beta Boule. A past member and Paul Harris fellow of The Rotary Club of Richmond, Dickerson is a presiding partner of the ECTEZUS Investment Club and founder of the Richmond Chapter of The National Negro Golf Association (NNGA).

In recognition of his contributions to the accounting profession and community, he was honored by the Virginia Society of CPAs (VSCPA) as its 2021 Ruth Coles Harris Advancing Diversity & Inclusion Award recipient. In 2022, he was awarded the 2022 Leadership Award by the Ruth Coles Harris Leadership Institute. 

Since 1908, the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) has served as a forum for the nation’s Boards of Accountancy, which administer the Uniform CPA Examination, license more than 672,000 certified public accountants and regulate the practice of public accountancy in the United States.
