Ohio Rep. Bill Dean (R-Xenia) presented a proclamation on behalf of the Ohio House of Representatives on April 4, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1974 tornado. The full text of the proclamation reads:
On behalf of the members of the 135th General Assembly of Ohio, we extend special recognition to Central State University on its commemoration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the 1974 tornado.
On April 3, 1974, Greene County was struck by a devastating F5 tornado, and this horrific event resulted in the tragic loss of more than thirty lives, over one thousand injuries, and catastrophic damage to the region, including the destruction of many buildings of priceless historic significance. In the wake of this tragedy, various local institutions, businesses, and groups of citizens banded together to rebuild, supporting one another on the road to recovery.
While progress continues to this day, it is a testament to the enduring resilience of the human spirit and collective character of area residents that they remain undiminished in their resolve.
As they take part in the commemoration of this anniversary, all those associated with Central State University have the solemn opportunity not only to remember the terrible events of that day but also to recommit themselves to the building of a better future. Despite the void left by the lives lost and the destruction of historic buildings as a result of this tragedy, there is a strength of hope that remains undiminished, and we encourage everyone participating in this observance to find inspiration in that truth and to reflect with pride on the indomitable spirit of their community.
Thus, with sincere pride, we commend Central State University on its efforts to honor the legacy of the 1974 tornado and salute all those responsible for organizing this event as fine Ohioans.
