Central State University Admissions tours Michigan to award scholarships
February 15, 2023 — The Central State University Admission’s Recruiting Tour has become an annual event aimed to share the benefits of Central State University student life and educational opportunities.
Central State University President Jack Thomas, Ph.D., and officials of the Central State Admissions Office traveled to Detroit to award scholarships totaling over $200,000 to 50 students currently attending Detroit Public Schools' Renaissance High School and Cass Technical High School. Another 10 students with grade point averages of 3.8 or higher received Presidential Excellence Scholarships from Central State University Honors College.
Thomas, a recognized international scholar and higher education administrator, knows the importance of a friendly, accommodating atmosphere for students. He said in the Aug. 18, 2021, issue of CEO Magazine, "I take great pride in having a direct connection with the students. And part of our grand element as a Historically Black College and University is this unified family atmosphere and environment. You can come to CSU and you’re not just a number. We get to know our students. A differentiating factor is our ability to connect and make time to truly serve our students holistically. And we know that it takes a higher level of intimacy and connection to really provide that support."
Central State University is in central Ohio, between Columbus and Dayton. As Ohio’s only public Historically Black College or University and 1890 Land-Grant Institution, CSU promotes ethnic diversity among the students, faculty, and staff. The University has maintained accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1949 and received its land-grant designation in 2014.
Ten residence halls house over 1,300 students in supportive, on-campus communities. Living in one of the residence halls at Central State University is a unique opportunity to experience campus life in a nurturing environment.
Central State develops leaders who want to make society better. Students are guided by the tenets of academic excellence. These values define and drive the preparation of CSU graduates for leadership and global service.
Chenae Roker, a junior in the College of Education, said, "I had a goal of changing the world. I think the best way to do that is to be a teacher. I always had great teachers growing up. All of my teachers inspired me to do great things.”
Roker, originally from the Bahamas, has been successful at Central State. “My professors have taught me a lot,” she said. “With the support system I have now, I wouldn’t change anything.”
With 18 countries from around the world represented, CSU has a focus on student success. The 24:1 student-to-faculty ratio, over 135 years of educating students, and 41 degrees lead to the profound impact CSU has on the community, graduating students who become leaders and public servants at home and abroad.
