Central State University Extension launches free Just Jump afterschool program

Central State University Extension 4-H Youth Development is excited to announce the Just Jump Afterschool Jump Rope Club, a free, eight-session program designed to encourage youth to stay active while learning from former World Jump Rope Champion Shaun Hamilton.
The program, hosted at Community STE(A)M Academy in Xenia, will take place on Tuesdays from 3:15-4:15 p.m. on the following dates: March 4 and 11, April 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29, and May 6. Youth participants are expected to attend at least six of the eight sessions.

Participants will have the unique opportunity to make their own jump rope, enhance their physical fitness, and learn from a world-class athlete. Hamilton, who is also the President of the International Jump Rope Federation and a member of the Olympic Committee, will share his inspiring personal journey, “How A Jump Rope Saved My Life.”
As a child, Hamilton struggled with a severe stuttering disorder that led educators to label him a slow learner. However, after joining an afterschool jump rope program, his stuttering vanished due to jumping rope, which enhanced his right and left brain synchronization. He gained confidence, improved his coordination, and eventually became a world champion. Today, he is working to have jump rope recognized as an Olympic sport and is passionate about encouraging youth to stay active.
Hamilton will give the keynote address during an assembly from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at Central State University Community Service Day on Wednesday, March 5. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to the public.
“This is a unique opportunity for third through 12th graders to have fun, increase their jump rope skills, and hear a powerful story about perseverance,” said Jodi Black, a 4-H Youth Development Educator with Central State University Extension.
“Jumping rope is a great way for youth to stay active, and we’re excited to offer this free opportunity.”
Registration is required, and space is limited to 25 youth. Each participant will receive a free jump rope. To register, contact Black at sblack@centralstate.edu or 937-993-2787.
