Central State University hosts Community Service Day to inspire local youth

Central State University is excited to welcome approximately 200 local students in grades 5-8 and community members for Community Service Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 5, 2025. The event, sponsored by Central State University Extension in partnership with Central State University, aims to introduce students to careers in STEM and agriculture, and healthy living through hands-on activities, educational sessions, and inspiring guest speakers. It is free and open to the public.
Students will participate in tours of the water resources and soils labs, giving them a firsthand look at scientific research and careers in environmental sciences. They will also explore wellness and nutrition at the Healthy Living Fair, where student organizations will showcase important health initiatives. The visit to the Central State campus is a culmination of educational outreach that includes CSU Extension educators visiting classrooms to provide demonstrations and interactive activities on cooking, nutrition, and healthy living.
Shaun Hamilton, a World Jump Rope Champion who overcame a severe stuttering disorder and defied expectations to become a successful scholar-athlete, will give the keynote address during an assembly from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Joshua I. Smith Center for Education & Natural Sciences. The 77th Miss Central State University, Breanne Lovelace, will also share insights on leadership.
Other key highlights of the event include:
- A Healthy Snack Station, where students can learn about nutritious eating habits.
- Giveaways to engage and reward participants.
- An introduction to horticulture therapy, hosted by Central State University Counseling Services, to showcase the benefits of plants in mental health and well-being.
- Information about careers in agriculture that support healthy living.
Students will be treated to a free lunch, while community members are welcome to purchase meals at the Marauder Cafeteria.
"Community Service Day is a fantastic opportunity for young students to explore STEM, agriculture, and wellness in a fun and interactive environment," said Alcinda Folck, Ph.D., associate extension administrator at Central State University Extension, a program of the 1890 Land-Grant Programs.
