
Central State University mourns the passing of Dr. John Zamonski

Central State University is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. John Alexander Zamonski, esteemed professor emeritus of English, who died on April 16 at the age of 86.

Dr. Zamonski began his tenure at Central State in 1976 and dedicated four decades to educating and mentoring students until his retirement in 2016. In recognition of his unwavering commitment and impactful service, he was honored with emeritus status upon retirement.
“Dr. John Zamonski was a pillar of Central State University’s academic community,” said CSU President Morakinyo A.O. Kuti, Ph.D. “For 40 years, he inspired generations of students through his passion for literature and unwavering commitment to excellence. I was fortunate to have been a student of Dr. Zamonski in two English courses. His legacy is woven into the fabric of our Institution, and his influence will continue to resonate through the lives he touched. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Dr. Zamonski’s contributions will forever be remembered and cherished.”
Anne-Marie Walkowicz, Interim Associate Dean in the College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education (CHASE), described Dr. Zamonski as “an amazing mentor and friend." As she recalls, “I had the privilege of working with Dr. Zamonski for six years. He was always willing to share his experience in teaching and had an unwavering commitment to supporting young faculty to help them grow."

Born in Detroit, Michigan, on Dec. 3, 1938, Dr. Zamonski earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in English from the University of Detroit. Following his service in the U.S. Army, he pursued a Ph.D. in English at Ohio University, according to his obituary.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Zamonski was a cherished member of the Dayton Sherlock Holmes Club, known as "The Agra Treasurers," for over 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, five children, eight grandchildren, and extended family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in Kettering, Ohio. Visitation will precede the service at 11 a.m. Dr. Zamonski will be laid to rest privately at Dayton National Cemetery.
