Central State University hosts Diabetes Awareness Day on Nov. 2 at CSU-Dayton

Diabetes Awareness Day will feature free health screenings, diabetes wellness talks, food demonstrations, community health fair, and more. 

Central State University (CSU) Extension will host Diabetes Awareness Day on Saturday, Nov. 2, at CSU-Dayton, 840 Germantown St., Dayton, Ohio. The day’s activities will run from 10 a.m. until about 3 p.m. and will feature free health screenings, diabetes wellness talks, free food demonstrations, a community health fair featuring vendors and resources, and more. 

Dr. Jose Toledo, vice president for Research and Development and director of CSU 1890 Land-Grant Programs, will lead the second grand opening of the Community Health Care Worker Program at CSU-Dayton. 

“Diabetes Awareness Day is one of CSU Extension’s signature programs that draws a large number of community members of all walks of life,” said Renita Porter, program leader, Family and Consumer Sciences. “We are expecting a great turnout this year.”  

Diabetes Awareness Day will include diverse offerings in health screenings, diabetes wellness talks, food demonstrations, healthy recipes, and community health fair, with line dancing capping the day’s activities. 

  • Health screenings: Feet checks with Dr. Tanisha Richmond, owner and operator of Richmond Foot and Ankle Clinic, and medicine checks with pharmacist Nnodum Iheme, owner of Ziks Pharmacy. 
  • Diabetes wellness talks: The importance of taking your medication correctly; personal experience living through a kidney transplant with Jackie Anderson; “How to ask your doctor questions with Dr. Morris Brown”; and making exercise fun with CSU Extension’s James Keys. 
  • Food demonstrations: healthy snacks, salads, simple breakfast, and dinner made easy. 
  • Healthy recipes 
  • Line dancing 

“We have something for everyone who wants to take their health and wellness more seriously, plus they will have fun in the process,” said James Keys, interim program extension associate for Family and Consumer Sciences, who will present “Making exercise fun with James Keys. “So come on out and have fun and feel well at the same time.”
