Central State University is proud to celebrate Katrina Swinehart-Held, Ph.D., as the recipient of the 2024 President’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Service. For the past seven years, Dr. Swinehart-Held has poured her heart into serving the campus community, using her passion and dedication to create meaningful connections, elevate her colleagues, and empower students to thrive.

Dr. Swinehart-Held is an Associate Professor of Agricultural Education and Chair of the Department of Professional Education and Music in the College of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Education at Central State University. She holds a bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree in Agricultural Education from The Ohio State University.

Service is at the core of Dr. Swinehart-Held’s work, and it’s a journey she has taken to heart. Whether it is her tireless work on committees or her hands-on mentorship with students, Dr. Swinehart-Held has been a driving force in shaping the University’s culture of collaboration. She’s not just a faculty member; she’s a vital thread woven into the fabric of Central State.

Her leadership on the University Senate’s executive committee is one of the many standout contributions that have earned her recognition. For seven years, Dr. Swinehart-Held has been the voice of faculty in critical discussions, ensuring that her colleagues’ perspectives are heard and acted upon. But her impact does not stop there. She has served on multiple committees, including as Vice Chair of the Faculty Senate for the past two academic years and chair of the Senate's handbook committee. Dr. Swinehart-Held has also been a key player in accreditation efforts, all while balancing her demanding teaching responsibilities.

But it is not just about the work that happens behind closed doors. Dr. Swinehart-Held is a champion for students, devoting her time to advising student organizations like the Aspiring Educators. Her mentorship extends far beyond the classroom, as she offers guidance, leadership, and the kind of support that inspires students to dream bigger and reach higher.

Her dedication to service also resonates in her national efforts. As a member of the American Association of Agricultural Educators, Dr. Swinehart-Held has shaped conferences and driven initiatives that highlight the power of education and research. Locally, she’s an advocate for the community, volunteering with the Farm Bureau and guiding 4-H youth in hands-on agricultural experiences that make an impact on the next generation of leaders.

For Dr. Swinehart-Held, giving back is more than a duty — it’s a calling. Growing up on a family farm, she learned early on the power of community, and she has dedicated her career to returning that kindness and support. As she puts it:

“I try to give back because people poured into me. It’s about making a difference.”

Dr. Swinehart-Held’s service does not just reflect her professional commitment — it is deeply personal. “Sometimes it’s hard to know if you’re making a difference, but this recognition reminds me that I am,” she said. Her work is fueled by a simple but powerful desire: to make the lives of those around her better.

The 2024 President’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Service honors not just the scope of Dr. Swinehart-Held’s contributions, but the heart behind them. Her approach to service is driven by a love for her colleagues and students, and a deep belief that everyone deserves someone who cares. Whether she is volunteering with students or serving on a national committee, her goal is always the same: to make a positive, lasting impact.

Looking ahead, Dr. Swinehart-Held’s dedication to service shows no signs of slowing down. As a department chair and committed faculty member, she remains focused on giving back in meaningful ways — whether it’s through her leadership, mentoring future educators, or continuing her community work. Her journey is one of giving, learning, and growing alongside the very people she serves.

The 2024 President’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Service reflects her past accomplishments and is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make when they dedicate themselves to the greater good.
